THE OPPORTUNITY
Four schools within the Union Twp School District, Union High School, Burnet Middle School, Hannah Caldwell Elementary School and Franklin Elementary School required HVAC system improvements due to the age of systems and inefficient control systems.
THE CHALLENGE
The task was to design new HVAC systems, including Air Handling Units, Steam Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, and a Combined Heating & Power Plant provided with new DDC controls to improve the overall building’s efficiency. The HVAC systems were to be integrated into existing hydronic and duct systems.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
Improving energy efficiency was a primary objective for this project as part of the Schneider Electrics ESIP study. HVAC equipment was provided with premium efficiency motors and variable speed control. Bi-Polar Ionization was used to reduce overall ventilation requirements while meeting Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Standards to reduce the equipment’s cooling and heating capacity. Better humidity control was also incorporated into the new equipment controls.
