THE OPPORTUNITY

Seton Hall engaged PS&S to upgrade the incoming service substation at the University’s South Orange campus.

THE CHALLENGE

The existing substation was fed from the Utility at 26 kV and stepped down to 4.16 kV via two 5000 kVA transformers. The Utility utilizes the switchgear on the campus to feed through to downstream Utility substations. The transformers and switchgear were over twenty years old and approaching the end of their useful life.

The switchgear replacement required a phased approach to the installation. It required that the existing and new switchgear be kept active during switchover.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

Based on projected load data for both existing and new buildings the sub-station was upgraded to 10 MVA.

PS&S coordinated with both the Utility and the contractor to ensure that the facility would be capable of remaining in operation throughout the transition to the new substation. In addition, several new feeders were added to the system to provide redundancy for all of the buildings on the campus.
