THE OPPORTUNITY
North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority operates a 3 MGD wastewater treatment plant along the Hudson River that required significant improvements and upgrades to both process and structural components.
THE CHALLENGE
The Woodcliff plant sits on a lot that is just over an acre in extent. The wastewater treatment plant can go from 3 MGD to 9 MGD during a rain event. PS&S needed to take special consideration regarding site constraints and maintain the permit limits at the WWTP.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
Working closely with NBMUA staff and operators, PS&S developed strategies and overcame constraints to keep the Woodcliff WWTP operating properly. Work included the repair of clarifiers, replacement of odor control systems, chemical feed systems, sludge handling, and trickling filter rehabilitation, upgrade of numerous pumps and controls and flood proofing the generator building. Procedures and construction sequencing were added to the construction documents to limit downtime of vital process equipment. Clarifiers and trickling filters were staggered and specific coatings were used to maintain operations. Bypass pumping procedures were put in place to maintain proper flow through the plant.
