THE OPPORTUNITY

This client is a global biologics nonprofit organization that saves and heals lives by honoring donated gifts and serving patients, they collaborate with the medical, scientific, as well as organ and tissue donation communities. To expand their operations, the client leased a new 165,000 sf pre-engineered Butler building as it was being constructed. The new facility was designed for the expansion of their musculoskeletal, dermis and placenta tissue processing . PS&S’ assignment was to program, and provide Conceptual Design, a BOD, Schematic Design, and Detailed Design Services.

THE CHALLENGE

PS&S’ challenge was to design the client’s processes within a pre-engineered 900 feet long and 160 feet wide building. Based on the program, the flow of the process, and the length of the building, the solution became a linear flow from incoming raw materials to outgoing finished products. A secondary structure needed to be designed in the interior of the building to house all the mechanical HVAC equipment and support a walkable ceilings for ISO 4 and 5 clean room production areas. An additional challenge, included housing 300 -80 C freezers for storage of donor tissue.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S started with modifying the pre-engineered building to adapt to the program of the spaces and to provide MTF Biologics with a brand image to the building. The program also included attaching modular clean rooms to the outside of the building as a Phase 1 support to current production requirements. Subsequent phase programs included inventory control and distribution, packaging and labeling, clean room processing, laboratory services, supply chain and warehousing and offices with amenity spaces. The processing clean rooms were design for cGMP with pre-manufactured clean room wall panels, walkable cleaning system, and with ISO-4 through ISO -8 clean room classifications. Processing included ISO-4 processing suites, lyophilization, fluid processing, decontamination washers, sterilization autoclaves, donor processing, locker rooms, gowning rooms and laboratory testing. PS&S provided Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection, and Structural Engineering services.
