THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S provided state-of-the-art teaching laboratories for each of the three Sciences at this higher education university. Student capacities for each of the “new” labs reflect the move to a four-year curriculum, generating the following activity:

  • Biology – thirty-two students per section.
  • Chemistry – twenty-four students per section.
  • Physics – sixteen students per section.

In each Lab, provided was a new teaching/demo podium containing the following technologies: projector, computer, document camera, digital microscope, DVD/CD player, audio recording and playback, digital camera to deliver images from the teaching station to each student workstation. This two-way system greatly enhances student/instructor interaction. In addition to these general requirements, specific lab needs were as follows:

  • Teaching Laboratory: Provided new bench configuration to provide a stronger visual relationship to the new teaching podium. Isolated sink functions to perimeter as possible to make bench layouts more flexible. Provided three-sided glass teaching fume hood in lab for demo purposes. Provided more organized storage in main lab; reduce lab clutter. Provided new dedicated roof top air handling unit with controls to incorporate ceiling mounted heating panels, fume hood exhaust fan and laboratory purge fan for evacuation of high concentrations of in-use formaldehyde.
  • Prep/Storage Area: Reconfigured to optimize use. High density storage system with preparation lab benches.
  • Research Lab: Provided fume hood and lab benches small scale testing and research perimeter configuration with adjacent microscope lab with black-out capabilities. Provided new dedicated roof top air handling unit with controls to incorporate ceiling mounted heating panels, fume hood exhaust fan and multiple room occupancies.
  • Commissioning Services: Two roof top air handling units, four exhaust fans dedicated to fume hoods, storage area for chemicals, laboratory purge system. Controls for cooling, re-heat, ceiling mounted heating panels, outside air requirements.
